WILD PLACES AND TRAVELS
If you have use for a photographer/writer/humanistic researcher who is field-hardened and savvy with international travel and research (including expedition planning) on any future endeavors, Arctic or otherwise, please reach out or otherwise get in touch.
Some food for thought, whether true or not.
"'All true wisdom is only to be found far from the dwellings of men, in the great solitudes; and it can only be attained through suffering. Suffering and privation are the only things that can open the mind of man to that which is hidden from his fellows.' ― Igjugarjuk, of the Caribou Eskimos" in Across Arctic America by Knud Rasmussen, 1927

“The sensation of freedom was exhilarating, though tinged with a shade of loneliness, a touch of sorrow. The old dream of total independence, beholden to no man and no woman, floated above his days like smoke from a pipe dream, like a silver cloud with a dark lining. For even Hayduke sensed, when he faced the thing directly, that the total loner would go insane. Was insane. Somewhere in the depths of solitude, beyond wildness and freedom, lay the trap of madness.” ― Edward Abbey,
The Monkey Wrench Gang

  • Expeditions with Purpose: The Intersection of Adventure Photography with Pressing Environmental Issues
  • Wilderness Exploration as a Philosophical Act: A Brief Memoir
  • Outside Online: Chris McCandless Obsession Problem by Diana Saverin (I include this, not because I wrote it, but because the potluck featured in the article was at my cabin. I could probably teach an entire class on McCandless and Romanticism!)
  • Denali National Park Instagram (Apparently, I’m Insta-Famous + proof that I know how to have fun)
  • Brush and Bog: The World’s First and Only Bushwhacking Magazine! (Hopefully, this will demonstrate my capacity for design, creativity, and creative writing, as well as love of the outdoors, but not detract from my ability for serious scholarship)
  • Rocky Mountaineers Missoula Blog Entry: Granite Peak Beartooths
  • Rocky Mountaineers Missoula Blog Entry: Glacier National Park Split Mountain
New Photos: I created a new Flickr account devoted purely to Alaska, featuring Alaska 2022 (Gates of the Arctic and Fairbanks) + Alaska from 2006 to 2019 and a Flickr account devoted entirely to Iceland.

Adventure and Environmental Presentation in Boulder, CO (6/2022)
I presented on some of my global packrafting adventures, often motivated by environmental issues - what I call "Expeditions With Purpose". There was a fundraising raffle for the Wild Foundation.

Brooks Range Fog

Picture
A valley fog rolls in from the Arctic Ocean to the glaciated Continental Divide, Brooks Range, Alaska, USA. A storm soon followed bringing lightning and significant snowfall.

Zen Erratic

Picture
A glacial erratic dropped from the ice that carved the nearby valley in the Clearwater Mountains, Alaska, USA. The clean split, moss, and perfectly placed creek resemble a finely arranged Zen garden.

LIFE AT SEA

Picture
I lived a total of eight months on four Navy ships as a contract teacher between 2011 and 2015. Six months were out at sea in the Mediterranean, Persian Gulf, Indian Ocean, and Pacific Ocean; two months were in port in Japan. This is a small sampling of that time. I've chosen photographs carefully to exclude people or detailed features of ships. I visited many ports, but these are generally not included here as the focus is ship life.

JAPAN

Picture
i lived in Yokosuka, Japan for two months teaching aboard an aircraft carrier in 2011. Near the end of my term, I was aboard the carrier when the Tōhoku Earthquake triggered a tsunami that ultimately led to the Fukushima Daiichi disaster. Shortly afterwards, I traveled to Kyoto.
